Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas Airport, commonly known as Madrid Barajas Airport, stands as the principal international airport serving Madrid, Spain. With a sprawling area of 3,050 hectares, it holds the distinction of being the second-largest airport in Europe in terms of physical size, following Paris–Charles de Gaulle Airport. In 2019, it facilitated the travel of 61.8 million passengers, making it not only the busiest airport in Spain but also the fifth-busiest in Europe. The airport’s strategic location, only 9 km from Madrid’s financial district and 13 km northeast of the historic center, positions it as a crucial gateway connecting Europe with Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula.

Established in 1931, Madrid Barajas Airport has evolved into a pivotal aviation center in Europe. Over the years, its growth has been marked by expansions, modernizations, and the construction of multiple terminals and runways. By the 1970s, the airport experienced a surge in traffic, reaching 4 million passengers. The ensuing years witnessed the construction of the international terminal (T1) and the introduction of shuttle services between Madrid and Barcelona. The 1982 FIFA World Cup spurred significant expansions and modernizations, setting the stage for continued development in the 1990s and early 2000s. Terminal 4, one of the world’s largest airport terminals, was inaugurated in 2006, along with two additional runways.

Madrid Barajas Airport’s facilities include five passenger terminals: T1, T2, T3, T4, and T4S. Terminal 4, designed by acclaimed architects, boasts an expansive area of 760,000 square meters and is equipped to handle 70 million passengers annually. The airport’s pivotal role in air travel is emphasized by its role as the primary hub and maintenance base for airlines like Iberia and Air Europa. Renowned for its efficiency and innovation, Madrid Barajas Airport continues to undergo enhancements, with plans to expand and renovate existing installations to increase its yearly capacity from 70 to 80 million passengers, bridging the architectural gap between original and newer terminals.

A comprehensive expansion plan, known as Plan Barcelona, was completed in 2009, incorporating a third terminal, a new control tower, and an additional runway. Despite its success, the airport has become a subject of political discussion regarding management and control between the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Spanish Government, involving AENA (the airport manager) and various airlines like Iberia and Spanair.

Palma de Mallorca Airport Jet Charters

ICAO: LEPA
IATA:PMI
City:Palma
Country:Spain
Address:07611 Palma, Balearic Islands, Spain

Palma de Mallorca Airport, also known as Son Sant Joan Airport, stands as a key international gateway situated 8 km east of Palma, Mallorca, Spain. In 2020, the airport navigated the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, handling 6.1 million passengers after accommodating an impressive 29.7 million in 2019. This resilient hub is the third busiest airport in Spain, following Madrid–Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat. Serving as the primary base for Air Europa and a focus airport for several major carriers, including Eurowings, EasyJet, Jet2.com, Ryanair, and Vueling, Palma de Mallorca Airport plays a pivotal role in connecting the region to global destinations. The airport shares its runways with the nearby Son Sant Joan Air Force Base, operated by the Spanish Air and Space Force.

The airport’s history traces back to the early 20th century when the Spanish Government’s interest in airmail led to the establishment of air routes to the Balearic Islands. In 1921, Aeromarítima Mallorquina initiated postal flights, using seaplanes in the port of Palma de Mallorca. The subsequent years witnessed the foundation of airline companies and the utilization of flat fields like Son Sant Joan for aviation experiments. The demand for a larger civilian airport prompted the construction of Palma de Mallorca Airport, officially opening on July 7, 1960. Subsequent expansions, including the addition of terminals and runways, accommodated the airport’s exponential growth. The 1980s saw the construction of a new central terminal building, designed by Majorcan architect Pere Nicolau Bover, further enhancing the airport’s capacity and facilities.

The airport’s growth trajectory continued into the 21st century, with passenger numbers exceeding 23.2 million in 2007. Despite a temporary decline after the September 11 attacks in 2001, Palma de Mallorca Airport has consistently played a crucial role in regional and international air travel. In recent years, the airport has handled over 29.7 million passengers annually, with a focus on destinations in mainland Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The Summer months witness a remarkable operational intensity, with the airport handling as many movements as London–Gatwick on its busiest days, showcasing its significance in European air traffic.

Tenerife North Airport, formerly known as Los Rodeos Airport, plays a vital role as the smaller of the two international airports on the captivating island of Tenerife, Spain. Situated in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, it stands 11 km from Santa Cruz at an elevation of 633 meters. The airport handled 3,717,944 passengers in 2012, contributing to the island’s combined passenger movement with Tenerife South Airport, surpassing Gran Canaria Airport’s figures. Serving as an inter-island hub, Tenerife North connects all seven main Canary Islands, offering connections to the Iberian Peninsula and Europe.

With a rich history, Tenerife North Airport witnessed a tragic event in 1977, becoming the site of the deadliest accident in aviation history when two Boeing 747s collided on the runway in heavy fog conditions, resulting in the loss of 583 lives. The airport’s evolution began years before its official construction, with the field at Los Rodeos hastily prepared for the first unofficial flight into Tenerife in the late 1930s. Over the following years, expansions, hangars, and a paved runway marked the airport’s development, leading to its official opening in 1946. The airport continued to grow, facing challenges and improvements, including the reinforcement of the runway and installation of an Instrument Landing System (ILS) in anticipation of the Boeing 747.

Tenerife North Airport underwent significant developments in the 2000s, including the opening of a new terminal in 2002, allowing the airport to reintegrate into the international flight network. The addition of international flights resumed after being exclusive to Tenerife South since 1978. The airport faced tragic incidents, such as the Dan-Air Flight 1008 crash in 1980. Recent developments include the introduction of new routes, like Air Europa’s route to Miami and Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas flying the same route with Airbus A340s. Despite challenges, Tenerife North Airport stands as a crucial gateway connecting travelers to the enchanting Canary Islands.

Named after the Galician romanticist writer and poet Rosalía de Castro, it holds the distinction of being the second busiest airport in northern Spain after Bilbao Airport. Located in the parish of Lavacolla, just 12 km from Santiago de Compostela, the airport played a historical role during the Spanish Civil War, with political prisoners contributing to its construction. In 2022, Santiago de Compostela Airport facilitated travel for 3,236,619 passengers and serves as a focus city for Vueling and the sole focus city in Northern Spain for Ryanair.

The airport’s rich history dates back to its establishment in October 1932 by a group of aviation enthusiasts, with the first scheduled flight taking place in 1937. Over the years, Santiago de Compostela Airport underwent significant developments, including the construction of a new terminal in 1969 and subsequent expansions, culminating in the opening of a modern passenger terminal on October 13, 2011. This new terminal, covering an impressive 74,000 sq m, boasts 22 check-in desks, 3 security checkpoints, 4 baggage carousels, and 13 gates, with 5 equipped with airbridges. King Mswati III International Airport Jet Charters

Name:King Mswati III International Airport
ICAO: FDSK
IATA:SHO
City:Sikhuphe
Country:Eswatini
Address:P. O. Box D361, The Gables H126, Eswatini

King Mswati III International Airport, formerly known as Sikhuphe International Airport during its planning and construction, stands as Eswatini’s primary international airport, inaugurated on 7 March 2014. This airport replaced Matsapha Airport, becoming the sole international airport in Eswatini capable of hosting commercial flights. The construction of King Mswati III International Airport, a monumental $150 million project, commenced in 2003, with substantial support from the Taiwanese government, which contributed $22 million to the initiative. Despite the environmental concerns associated with its proximity to Hlane Royal National Park, the airport aimed to bolster Eswatini’s tourism sector, positioning itself as a gateway to the country’s game parks and neighboring attractions like Victoria Falls, Maputo, the Kruger National Park, and KwaZulu-Natal game reserves.

Part of King Mswati III’s broader $1 billion millennium project investment initiative, the airport was envisioned to enhance Eswatini’s status as a tourist destination. However, the project had been on the drawing board since 1980, facing delays and challenges, including the opening of Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and upgrades to Maputo and Durban airports. The airport’s strategic plan involved replacing Matsapha Airport by 2010, with Matsapha subsequently being taken over by the military. Despite its inauguration on 7 March 2014 without an IATA license, the airport officially commenced operations on 30 September 2014. With plans for a 3,600-meter CAT 1 runway and a capacity for 300,000 passengers annually, King Mswati III International Airport aspired to accommodate large aircraft, including the Boeing 747, and establish itself as a global flight hub.

Country:Eswatini
Address:F8H7+PXQ, Matsapha, Eswatini

Matsapha Airport, situated near the city of Manzini in the Manzini District of Eswatini, serves as a key transportation hub for the Eswatini Government and facilitates mercy flights. Despite the inauguration of the King Mswati III International Airport in March 2014, Matsapha Airport continued to play a role in the region’s air travel, particularly for specific government and emergency flights. However, a transition was mandated by the Eswatini Civil Aviation Authority (ESWACAA), directing airlines to cease operations at Matsapha Airport and shift to the newly inaugurated King Mswati III Airport.

Historically, Matsapha Airport has been a significant transportation link, recording an annual passenger count of 70,000 until its closure. The airport’s utilization was planned to extend to royal and military functions, emphasizing its strategic importance beyond commercial flights. Despite the closure of Matsapha Airport for commercial operations, it remains an integral part of the broader aviation infrastructure in Eswatini, serving specific aviation needs and reflecting the evolving landscape of air travel in the region.

The airport’s facilities include a single runway, designated 07/25, with an asphalt surface spanning 2,600 by 45 meters. Positioned at an elevation of 2,075 feet above mean sea level, Matsapha Airport’s infrastructure supports a range of flights, contributing to the connectivity and accessibility of the Manzini region.

City:Lilongwe
Country:Malawi
Address:6Q9J+R3H, Lumbadzi, Malawi

Lilongwe International Airport, also known as Kamuzu International Airport, stands as the major international gateway to Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. Established in 1977 by the Nello L. Teer Company, the airport took over most airline operations from Old Lilongwe Airport, strategically located approximately 6 km west of the city center. Owned by Airport Developments Limited, Lilongwe International Airport has played a crucial role in connecting Malawi to global destinations, even though British Airways ceased its flights to London via Nairobi in March 2004.

Recognizing the need for modernization and improved facilities, the Government of Malawi sought assistance from the Government of Japan in August 2014. The objective was to rehabilitate the passenger terminal buildings and implement a more advanced air surveillance system, known as ADS-B, at the airport. Executed by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the ambitious rehabilitation project spanned 33 months, encompassing the expansion of the International terminal, refurbishment of the existing terminal building, and the installation of cutting-edge security and aerial surveillance systems. The fruits of this collaboration materialized in April 2019 when the new terminal buildings were officially handed over to the Government of Malawi, marking a significant leap in Lilongwe International Airport’s infrastructure.

Situated at an elevation of 4,035 feet (1,230 m) above mean sea level, Lilongwe International Airport boasts a well-equipped runway designated 14/32. Comprising an asphalt surface measuring 3,540 by 45 meters (11,614 ft × 148 ft), the runway efficiently supports the diverse range of aircraft that rely on Lilongwe as a pivotal hub in the region. This airport stands not just as a transportation hub but also as a symbol of Malawi’s commitment to modernizing its aviation infrastructure to meet the demands of a dynamic global landscape.

Chileka International Airport, situated approximately 13 km northwest of Blantyre, Malawi’s second-largest city, serves as a vital hub connecting the region to international destinations. As Malawi’s second international airport, it complements the role of Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, the nation’s capital. With geographical coordinates of 15°40’52.0″S latitude and 34°58’18.0″E longitude, the airport stands at an elevation of 2,555 feet above sea level, ensuring efficient operations for a variety of aircraft.

Equipped with two asphalt-paved runways, Chileka International Airport facilitates smooth takeoffs and landings. Runway 10/28 spans 2,325 by 30 meters, while Runway 15/33 measures 1,372 by 30 meters. These runways play a pivotal role in accommodating the diverse needs of air traffic, contributing to the airport’s status as a crucial transportation hub.

In April 2019, the airport initiated a significant renovation and extension project, temporarily closing Runway 10/28. Originally planned to conclude in three months, the renovations faced delays, pushing the reopening date several times. Throughout this period, the airport remained operational, managing smaller aircraft on Runway 15/33. Larger aircraft were redirected to Kamuzu International Airport, with connecting flights to and from Chileka International Airport on smaller aircraft. The project was successfully completed in December 2019, bringing both runways back to normal operations on January 1, 2020, reinforcing Chileka International Airport’s capacity and infrastructure for continued service to the region and beyond.

ICAO: LESU
IATA:LEU
City:Andorra – La Seu d’Urgell
Country:Spain
Address:Aeroport Andorra – La Seu, s/n, 25711 Montferrer, Lleida, Spain

Andorra La Seu d’Urgell Airport, situated in Catalonia, eastern Spain, serves both general aviation and commercial flights, providing a vital link to the city of La Seu d’Urgell and the microstate of Andorra. Owned by the government of Catalonia, the airport has a unique history. Initially opened in 1982, it closed to commercial traffic in 1984, exclusively serving private aircraft until 2008. The Catalan government, in a strategic move, acquired 85% of the airport’s land in 2008 with plans to redevelop and reopen it as Pirineus La Seu d’Urgell Airport.

Following extensive redevelopment work carried out by Acsa Sorigué, the airport officially reopened on June 4, 2010. In its first year post-reopening, the airport witnessed 1,751 flights, catering to over 3,000 passengers. An important milestone was reached in 2015 when, after an agreement with the Principality of Andorra, the airport was renamed Andorra La Seu d’Urgell Airport. This renaming was accompanied by increased air traffic, with regular and tourist charter flights commencing in the same year. Swiftair operated eight tourist charter flights each way during the summer of 2015, connecting the airport to Madrid and Palma de Mallorca.

The year 2015 also marked the entry of Air Andorra and Andorra Airlines, designating the airport as their main hub. These airlines facilitated connections to various airports in Spain and France, contributing to the airport’s growing significance. Furthermore, Twin Jet, a French regional airline, initiated flights to the airport in March 2018, linking it to Madrid, Marseille, and Palma de Mallorca. Andorra La Seu d’Urgell Airport’s transformation into a bustling commercial hub underscores its strategic importance in the region’s air transportation network.

IATA:CMN
City:Casablanca
Country:Morocco
Address:P3038, Casablanca, Morocco

Mohammed V International Airport, situated in Nouaceur Province and operated by the National Airports Office (ONDA), is the principal international gateway to Casablanca, Morocco. With a notable achievement in 2022, the airport earned its position as Morocco’s busiest and one of Africa’s top 10 busiest airports. The year 2022 witnessed approximately 7.6 million passengers, demonstrating a remarkable recovery to 74% of the pre-pandemic passenger numbers in 2019. Mohammed V International Airport serves as a pivotal hub for prominent airlines like Royal Air Maroc, Royal Air Maroc Express, and Air Arabia Maroc. Named in honor of King Mohammed V, who led Morocco to independence from French and Spanish colonial rule, this airport boasts a rich history and plays a significant role in the country’s aviation landscape.

The airport’s historical legacy can be traced back to its origins during World War II. Originally constructed by the United States in 1943, it was known as Berrechid Airfield and served as an auxiliary airfield for Casablanca’s Anfa Airport. During this time, it played a crucial role in handling diverse military traffic, serving as a stopover for flights en route to various destinations. After the war, it transitioned into a civil airport.

The 1950s witnessed the reopening of the airport, now known as Nouasseur Air Base, and its use as a staging area for B-47 Stratojet bombers during the Cold War. However, with Moroccan independence in 1956 and the ensuing political developments, the U.S. Air Force agreed to withdraw from the airport, completing this process by 1963. In the 2020s, Mohammed V Airport continued to maintain its status as a significant aviation hub, ranking as the fourth busiest airport on the African continent.

Today, Mohammed V International Airport serves as a vital gateway to Morocco, facilitating both domestic and international travel while contributing to the country’s robust aviation sector. Its growth and historical significance make it a key point of entry for travelers to this culturally rich and vibrant nation.
