With a rich history, Tenerife North Airport witnessed a tragic event in 1977, becoming the site of the deadliest accident in aviation history when two Boeing 747s collided on the runway in heavy fog conditions, resulting in the loss of 583 lives. The airport’s evolution began years before its official construction, with the field at Los Rodeos hastily prepared for the first unofficial flight into Tenerife in the late 1930s. Over the following years, expansions, hangars, and a paved runway marked the airport’s development, leading to its official opening in 1946. The airport continued to grow, facing challenges and improvements, including the reinforcement of the runway and installation of an Instrument Landing System (ILS) in anticipation of the Boeing 747.
Tenerife North Airport underwent significant developments in the 2000s, including the opening of a new terminal in 2002, allowing the airport to reintegrate into the international flight network. The addition of international flights resumed after being exclusive to Tenerife South since 1978. The airport faced tragic incidents, such as the Dan-Air Flight 1008 crash in 1980. Recent developments include the introduction of new routes, like Air Europa’s route to Miami and Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas flying the same route with Airbus A340s.
