Andorra La Seu d’Urgell Airport, situated in Catalonia, eastern Spain, serves both general aviation and commercial flights, providing a vital link to the city of La Seu d’Urgell and the microstate of Andorra. Owned by the government of Catalonia, the airport has a unique history. Initially opened in 1982, it closed to commercial traffic in 1984, exclusively serving private aircraft until 2008. The Catalan government, in a strategic move, acquired 85% of the airport’s land in 2008 with plans to redevelop and reopen it as Pirineus La Seu d’Urgell Airport.
Following extensive redevelopment work carried out by Acsa Sorigué, the airport officially reopened on June 4, 2010. In its first year post-reopening, the airport witnessed 1,751 flights, catering to over 3,000 passengers. An important milestone was reached in 2015 when, after an agreement with the Principality of Andorra, the airport was renamed Andorra La Seu d’Urgell Airport. This renaming was accompanied by increased air traffic, with regular and tourist charter flights commencing in the same year. Swiftair operated eight tourist charter flights each way during the summer of 2015, connecting the airport to Madrid and Palma de Mallorca.
The year 2015 also marked the entry of Air Andorra and Andorra Airlines, designating the airport as their main hub. These airlines facilitated connections to various airports in Spain and France, contributing to the airport’s growing significance. Furthermore, Twin Jet, a French regional airline, initiated flights to the airport in March 2018, linking it to Madrid, Marseille, and Palma de Mallorca. Andorra La Seu d’Urgell Airport’s transformation into a bustling commercial hub underscores its strategic importance in the region’s air transportation network.
