Lilongwe International Airport, also known as Kamuzu International Airport, stands as the major international gateway to Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. Established in 1977 by the Nello L. Teer Company, the airport took over most airline operations from Old Lilongwe Airport, strategically located approximately 6 km west of the city center. Owned by Airport Developments Limited, Lilongwe International Airport has played a crucial role in connecting Malawi to global destinations, even though British Airways ceased its flights to London via Nairobi in March 2004.

Recognizing the need for modernization and improved facilities, the Government of Malawi sought assistance from the Government of Japan in August 2014. The objective was to rehabilitate the passenger terminal buildings and implement a more advanced air surveillance system, known as ADS-B, at the airport. Executed by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the ambitious rehabilitation project spanned 33 months, encompassing the expansion of the International terminal, refurbishment of the existing terminal building, and the installation of cutting-edge security and aerial surveillance systems. The fruits of this collaboration materialized in April 2019 when the new terminal buildings were officially handed over to the Government of Malawi, marking a significant leap in Lilongwe International Airport’s infrastructure.

Situated at an elevation of 4,035 feet (1,230 m) above mean sea level, Lilongwe International Airport boasts a well-equipped runway designated 14/32. Comprising an asphalt surface measuring 3,540 by 45 meters (11,614 ft × 148 ft), the runway efficiently supports the diverse range of aircraft that rely on Lilongwe as a pivotal hub in the region. This airport stands not just as a transportation hub but also as a symbol of Malawi’s commitment to modernizing its aviation infrastructure to meet the demands of a dynamic global landscape.

Chileka International Airport, situated approximately 13 km northwest of Blantyre, Malawi’s second-largest city, serves as a vital hub connecting the region to international destinations. As Malawi’s second international airport, it complements the role of Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, the nation’s capital. With geographical coordinates of 15°40’52.0″S latitude and 34°58’18.0″E longitude, the airport stands at an elevation of 2,555 feet above sea level, ensuring efficient operations for a variety of aircraft.

Equipped with two asphalt-paved runways, Chileka International Airport facilitates smooth takeoffs and landings. Runway 10/28 spans 2,325 by 30 meters, while Runway 15/33 measures 1,372 by 30 meters. These runways play a pivotal role in accommodating the diverse needs of air traffic, contributing to the airport’s status as a crucial transportation hub.

In April 2019, the airport initiated a significant renovation and extension project, temporarily closing Runway 10/28. Originally planned to conclude in three months, the renovations faced delays, pushing the reopening date several times. Throughout this period, the airport remained operational, managing smaller aircraft on Runway 15/33. Larger aircraft were redirected to Kamuzu International Airport, with connecting flights to and from Chileka International Airport on smaller aircraft. The project was successfully completed in December 2019, bringing both runways back to normal operations on January 1, 2020, reinforcing Chileka International Airport’s capacity and infrastructure for continued service to the region and beyond.
