The Dominican Republic is the second largest country in the Caribbean and is, undoubtedly, the most diverse. It’s a cultural melting point that brings together history, art, nature and entertainment to craft a near-perfect travel experience that is just a couple hours south of Miami. Whether you’re looking for world-class beaches, exceptional resorts, adrenaline-filled sports and recreation, or just a secluded private space to unwind – you’ll be able to find something perfect for you in the Dominican Republic.
Here are some of our tips for how to make the most of your visit:
There is a sea of riches in terms of luxury accommodation and so it really depends on what atmosphere you’re looking for when you choose somewhere to stay. If you’re looking forward to engaging with the hustle and bustle of the city centre and all the magic that has to offer, then we’d recommend the ‘JW Marriott Santa Domingo’. It’s a wonderful luxury hotel that is very close to many of the city’s top attractions and provides a serene escape from the vibrant city life outside its walls. The highlight is undoubtedly an incredible rooftop bar where you can enjoy sundowners while drinking in the atmosphere of this Caribbean jewel.
If you want something slightly away from the crowds then you can’t go wrong with ‘Eden Roc Cap Cana’ – a unique mix of Italian and French inspired architecture but with the trademark Caribbean flair. You’ll be treated to expansive villas, lush gardens, world-class dining and access to one of the best beaches on the island. If privacy is what you’re after, this is the place.
The list of things to do is infinite. Seriously. Adventure seekers can enjoy some of the best surfing, kitesurfing and scuba diving in the region. The active can take in some of the incredible hikes, canyoning, mountain biking, horseback riding, rafting and paragliding experiences that are available. Those who prefer to stay indoors can access some of the best shopping and casino opportunities in the region, throw themselves into the vibrant urban nightlife scene or take a slower pace through some of the museums and theatres that abound.
Sports fans in particular will love being here. In addition to those activities mentioned above, baseball is a big deal in the country and gathers raving fans from coast to coast. And we can’t forget the golf courses. They are some of the most luxurious in the world – so if you’re bringing your clubs, you won’t lack for sensational experiences.
Culturally, the Dominican Republic has a wonderful assortment of museums, theatres and cultural exhibitions that showcase some of the unique artistic talent that has bloomed in this idyllic Caribbean location. The country boasts some of the oldest buildings in the Americas – a real time capsule of times gone by. There’s plenty to see and take in, regardless of where you are on the island – and you won’t find a friendlier people to guide you on that journey.
There aren’t any strict recommendations here on when to visit the Dominican Republic. Their hurricane season is generally from June to November, but the chances of a hurricane hitting the exact part of the island where you’re staying is very slim. Weather all year is quite mild, so it shouldn’t matter that much when you go. And the great advantage of the country being so big and diverse, you’ll always find life and vitality in the island, all year round.
The dining landscape in the country is vast and incredibly varied. Every cuisine you can think of is at your fingertips. Though, we really would recommend trying out some of the local delicacies to truly experience what makes this island so unique and so special. For a really authentic experience we recommend ‘El Meson De La Cava’, a local favourite with some of the best Latin and Caribbean food that you’ll find. Don’t forget to try some of the famous local rum and the world-beating cigars that have made the country the number one exporter of premium cigars across the globe.
Alternatively, we are also able to provide a world-class private chef to prepare food for you personally, according to whatever you’re craving at the time. This is a firm favourite for many of our clients because of the ability to create customized dining experiences just for your tastebuds, while maintaining full privacy and discretion.
