Turks and Caicos Islands – The Affluent Traveller’s Guide

When you want to get away from the hustle and bustle to somewhere tranquil and idyllic, there are few locations that offer the magic that you’ll find in the Turks and Caicos Islands, just off the coast of Cuba and the Bahamas. The whole expanse is a set of 40 low-lying coral islands that has the kind of scenery that will take your breath away. It’s incredible that this destination is mostly a secret, and we don’t expect it to stay that way for long.

In 2017, hurricanes devastated the islands, but all of that has now been repaired and rebuilt with a very modern aesthetic and renewed spirit. It’s known as an exclusive, secluded getaway for good reason, it’s very hard not to get caught up in its atmosphere when you’re there. The first thing you’ll notice as you arrive is the crystal-clear turquoise water contrasted against the white sand beaches, providing that picture-perfect moment that will stay in your mind long after you leave. The beaches are, quite simply, one-of-a-kind. When you step out onto that sand, you’ll feel like you’ve arrived in a different world.

Accommodation

The accommodation on the islands is luxurious and tasteful, spread out across three different sections each with its own unique feeling and ambience. When combined with the world class spas that adorn each one, guests are whisked into an all-too-rare state of pure relaxation, which is what the islands are truly designed to deliver. It is the perfect antidote to the craziness of urban city living.

Most of the 5-star luxury hotels are located in the Providenciales area and we recommend Amanyara, an Asian-inspired hotel that boasts a 164-foot lack volcanic rock infinity pool amongst a range of other luxury options. Go for one of the guest villas and you’ll benefit from ultimate privacy including access to a private beach. You’ll feel your cares melt away as you sink into life on the islands. You’ll breathe new air into your flesh and bones.

Attractions

For those who want to explore the beautiful water, there are incredible diving opportunities available on the islands, especially at Salt Cay which is host to one of the largest reef systems on the planet, mostly untouched by humanity. You can get there by chartering a private yacht for your time on the islands, a popular choice for those who want to make the most of the experience. If water sports are more your thing, then you’ll be spoilt for choice with a wide range including parasailing, jet skiing, flyboarding, windsurfing, wakeboarding and plenty more. There are lots of opportunities to skip across the surface in your vehicle of choice, revelling in the sun on your skin and the breeze through your hair.

For those who prefer land, there are fantastic shopping, golfing and gambling experiences that can be customised and designed for your enjoyment. The entertainment on the islands is something that you won’t want to miss out on – because it’s one of the most valued pieces of any trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands. We’d also recommend a guided helicopter tour to give you a bird’s eye perspective of the islands and show you just how remote your vacation destination actually is.

Culture

A seriously underrated part of this destination is the rich cultural history that is present and continues to be celebrated today. The Turks and Caicos National Museum house much of the history of the islands including a very special spot on the shore of Cockburn Town where it is reported that Christopher Columbus first docked in the Western Hemisphere all those years ago. But well before Columbus arrived, the islands were inhabited by Taino and Lucayan Indians who were well known for their seafaring, salt raking and farming activities that were actually well ahead of their time. It’s a historic piece of human history – one that is symbolic of the old world and the new world colliding – catalysing good and bad changes for the world as a whole. So, it can be somewhat surreal to stand on that ground and imagine what life could have been like if things had happened differently.

Timing

The weather is beautiful all year round, but April and May are particularly good times to visit simply because there are fewer people and you’re able to enjoy more of the island to yourself. Its secluded nature is one of its strongest features and so this makes a big difference. Peak periods seem to be between December and March which is mostly in line with the rest of the Caribbean.

Food

The dining experiences on the islands are exquisitely varied, allowing you to try a new cuisine every single night if you wanted to. When it comes to fine dining options, you’ll want to make your selection by taking into account the view that the restaurant provides. For example, Magnolia is located on the ridge above Turtle Cove Marina in central Providenciales and offers breathtaking views over the North Coast ocean and Turtle Cove. Mango Reef and Parallel 23 also get honourable mentions as fantastic places to try the local seafood – especially conch, which the islands are world-renowned for.

If you’re planning on staying in the villa, a private chef can be arranged who will bring the very best of the island cuisine right to you, for you to enjoy at your leisure.

You worry about the sunblock and we’ll worry about your safety.

When you want to hop between islands, private chartered flights can be arranged and even helicopter transfers where appropriate.
