Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport, situated in the captivating city of Cusco in southeastern Peru, serves as an international airport. The airport derives its name from Alejandro Velasco Astete, a notable Peruvian pilot who achieved the remarkable feat of being the first to cross the Andes by airplane in 1925. Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport commenced operations in December 1964.
Distinguished as the first Peruvian airport to introduce jetways, it has remained at the forefront of modernization in the country’s aviation infrastructure. The runway itself spans a length of 3400 meters (11,155 feet) and measures 45 meters (148 feet) in width. The extended length of the runway is necessary due to the airport’s elevated location.
On February 3, 2017, President Kuczynski announced the commencement of construction for the new Chinchero International Airport, planned to be situated in the suburb of Chinchero, a mere 30 minutes away from Cusco city. It is projected that the new airport will be completed by 2025, coinciding with the closure of Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport. Upon its inauguration, the Chinchero International Airport is expected to accommodate up to 6 million passengers, catering to the growing demand for air travel in the region.
