Arequipa International Airport, officially known as Rodríguez Ballón International Airport, serves as the primary airport for Arequipa, the capital of the Arequipa Region and Peru’s second largest city. Alongside Cusco’s Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport, it serves as one of the main air hubs in southern Peru. The airport is named in honor of Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón, an esteemed Peruvian aviator.
Arequipa International Airport acts as a significant air gateway for tourists visiting the city of Arequipa, the nearby ruins, and the renowned Colca Canyon, which ranks as the world’s second deepest canyon (after Cotahuasi Canyon, also located in Arequipa). The airport has experienced rapid growth in passenger traffic, with a reported figure of 1,689,921 passengers by the end of 2017, according to CORPAC, Peru’s national airport corporation. The current terminal has already surpassed its planned capacity of approximately 1.5 million passengers, and it is expected that the airport will reach over 2 million passengers.
The runway at Arequipa International Airport is entirely paved and includes a displaced threshold of 440 meters (1,440 ft) on Runway 28. The airport is currently operated by the consortium “Aeropuertos Andinos,” which has implemented reshuffling and modernization initiatives for the existing facilities. As part of these efforts, two boarding jet bridges were installed, and the main hall underwent expansion. The inaugural operation of the hall and the first jet bridge took place on September 20, 2013. The airport handles domestic flights to and from destinations such as Cusco, Lima, Piura, Tarapoto, and Trujillo. Additionally, it offers an international flight route to Santiago, Chile.
