Jorge Chávez International Airport serves as Peru’s primary airport for both domestic and international flights. Situated in Callao, it is located approximately 11 kilometers (6.8 mi) northwest of Lima Center, the capital city, and 17 kilometers (11 mi) from the district of Miraflores. In 2017, the airport facilitated the travel of 22,025,704 passengers. Previously, it functioned as a hub for Compañía de Aviación Faucett and Aeroperú, but now it serves as a hub for numerous aviation companies. The airport was named in honor of Jorge Chávez, a renowned Peruvian aviator who lived from 1887 to 1910.
The construction of Jorge Chávez International Airport aimed to replace Lima’s initial airport, the Limatambo Airport in San Isidro. In June 1965, the airport in Lima-Callao was renamed as “Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chávez” after the esteemed Peruvian aviator, Jorge Chávez Dartnell. Subsequently, in December 1965, the terminal building was officially inaugurated.
Significant developments occurred on October 24, 2018, when the Peruvian government handed over all the land to Lima Airport Partners, the airport operator, for the purpose of expanding and modernizing Jorge Chávez International Airport. This ambitious investment encompasses the construction of a new runway, a control tower, and an additional passenger terminal to complement the existing infrastructure. Simultaneously, the government plans to construct a new bridge and highway along the current Santa Rosa Avenue, directly connecting with the “Costa Verde” highway. These infrastructure enhancements will greatly benefit tourists and entrepreneurs who are primarily visiting Miraflores and the southern regions. By 2030, these improvements are projected to enable the smooth transit of up to 40 million passengers annually.
