Toncontín International Airport, also known as Teniente Coronel Hernán Acosta Mejía Airport, is a civil and military airport located just 6 kilometers from the heart of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. It has gained a reputation as one of the most extreme airports globally, primarily due to its challenging approach, especially in inclement weather. The airport’s history dates back to the early 20th century when it began as a makeshift landing field on the plains south of Tegucigalpa. By 1934, it officially became Toncontín Airport, inaugurated with the landing of a Douglas DC-3 from Pan American World Airways. Despite its historical significance, the airport also experienced its share of challenges. During the Football War of 1969, Toncontín was a major target for the Salvadoran Air Force and was bombed several times, leading to a remarkable repair effort by the Honduran Air Force.

La Mesa International Airport, officially named Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport, is situated approximately 11 kilometers southeast of San Pedro Sula, Honduras. It was named in honor of Ramón Villeda Morales, who served as the President of Honduras from 1957 to 1963. As the largest and busiest airport in Honduras, it played a crucial role in 2022 by handling over 1.1 million passengers and more than 20,000 international and domestic flights annually. It serves as a vital link for travelers heading to popular tourist destinations like La Ceiba and the beautiful Caribbean beaches of Roatán and Tela.

The airport’s history began with its inauguration in February 1965 to address the growing population and the challenges faced by pilots at the old airport in San Pedro Sula’s Barandillas neighborhood. In 1997, a modern passenger terminal was constructed at a new location to replace the older one, which had been inaugurated in 1965. This development significantly improved the airport’s capacity and services. In 2017, La Mesa International Airport achieved a significant milestone when Air Europa initiated direct flights to Madrid, marking Honduras’s first direct link to Europe. The airport has also faced challenges due to natural disasters, such as the damage caused by hurricanes Mitch in 1997 and Eta and Iota in 2020, which temporarily affected operations. In 2023, the airport underwent a significant remodeling project initiated by SAN (Servicio Aeroportuario Nacional), with a budget of $15 million, to introduce enhancements like a canopy and expansions to various sections of the airport.

Moreover, in January 2022, Roatan International Airport began work on extending the runway to accommodate up to 3 million passengers annually and to facilitate intercontinental flights, reinforcing its role as a gateway to the beautiful Roatán Island and the surrounding region.

Golosón International Airport, also referred to as La Ceiba Airport or Hector C. Moncada Air Base, is a key aviation facility located in the city of La Ceiba, on the picturesque north coast of Honduras in the Atlántida Department. This airport plays a significant role in connecting the city and the surrounding region to both domestic and international destinations, providing vital access for travelers to and from La Ceiba.

Named after Hector C. Moncada, Golosón International Airport stands on the western side of the city and serves as a pivotal transportation hub for the north coast of Honduras. Situated just 6 kilometers south of Comayagua’s city center, this airport found its home at the Soto Cano Air Base, signifying a significant milestone for civil and commercial air travel in the country.

This newly opened airport has rapidly gained recognition as one of Honduras’ most crucial aviation hubs. Notably, it boasts a greater capacity than the Toncontin International Airport in Tegucigalpa, playing an integral role in accommodating travelers not only from Comayagua but also from the capital city, Tegucigalpa. In fact, Comayagua International Airport took on a prominent role as the primary airport serving the capital city since October 2021.

The airport showcases impressive facilities with a capacity to accommodate up to 20 aircraft, and its sprawling terminal covers over 39,000 square meters. This is approximately four times the size of Toncontin in Tegucigalpa, emphasizing its significance in bolstering the country’s air travel infrastructure. Additionally, the airport’s runway ranks as the third longest in Honduras, following those in San Pedro Sula’s Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport and La Ceiba’s Golosón International Airport.

The establishment of Comayagua International Airport was a strategic move by the Honduran government. This airport was designed to serve not only the city of Comayagua but also Tegucigalpa, addressing the challenges posed by Toncontin International Airport in the capital. Due to the complexities of Toncontin’s topography and its reputation as one of the world’s most perilous airports, its expansion options were limited. With the introduction of Comayagua International Airport, Toncontin would be exclusively designated for domestic flights involving small aircraft with a passenger capacity of up to 33 individuals. This development signifies a significant enhancement to the country’s aviation network, with the new airport poised to alleviate the demands and restrictions placed on Honduras’ existing air travel infrastructure.
