Toncontín International Airport, also known as Teniente Coronel Hernán Acosta Mejía Airport, is a civil and military airport located just 6 kilometers from the heart of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. It has gained a reputation as one of the most extreme airports globally, primarily due to its challenging approach, especially in inclement weather. The airport’s history dates back to the early 20th century when it began as a makeshift landing field on the plains south of Tegucigalpa. By 1934, it officially became Toncontín Airport, inaugurated with the landing of a Douglas DC-3 from Pan American World Airways. Despite its historical significance, the airport also experienced its share of challenges. During the Football War of 1969, Toncontín was a major target for the Salvadoran Air Force and was bombed several times, leading to a remarkable repair effort by the Honduran Air Force.
Today, Toncontín International Airport is considered one of the world’s most difficult airports due to its short runway, proximity to mountainous terrain, and a historically challenging approach. The airport recently saw an extension to its runway, although it remains relatively short compared to international standards.
