Queen Beatrix International Airport, also referred to as “Internationale luchthaven Koningin Beatrix” in Dutch and “Aeropuerto Internacional Reina Beatrix” in Papiamento, is situated in Oranjestad, Aruba. This airport provides a range of flight services, connecting Aruba to destinations in the United States, Canada, various Caribbean nations, the northern coastal countries of South America, and some parts of Europe, particularly the Netherlands.
During World War II, the airport played a crucial role as the United States Army Air Forces Sixth Air Force used it to defend Caribbean shipping and the Panama Canal against German submarines. The airfield was renamed Dakota Field, and the terminal facilities became known as Dakota Airport. Various flying units were stationed at the airfield during this time.
On October 22, 1955, during a royal visit, the airport was officially named after Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands, and in 1980, it was renamed Queen Beatrix International Airport following her ascension to the throne.
This airport is equipped with United States border preclearance facilities and includes a terminal dedicated to private aircraft, which commenced operations in 2007. Notably, it was previously a hub for Air Aruba, an airline that has since gone bankrupt, and it served as one of the three hubs for ALM Antillean Airlines before Aruba’s separation from the Netherlands Antilles in 1986.
Since 2013, Queen Beatrix International Airport has been home to Aruba Airlines, a local carrier with a fleet consisting of three Airbus A320 family aircraft and two Bombardier CRJ200 aircraft. Aruba Airlines primarily focuses on connecting the region through its hub at this airport.
