Curaçao International Airport, also known as Hato International Airport, is the primary airport serving the island of Curaçao. Located on the north coast of Curaçao, just 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from the capital, Willemstad, this airport is the key link between the island and various destinations in Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean. With its impressive commercial runway, it can accommodate even Boeing 747 aircraft, making it a vital hub in the region.
The airport has played a central role for several airlines over the years, serving as a main base for Divi Divi Air, JetAir Caribbean, and EZAir. In 2014, Curaçao International Airport opened a dedicated General Aviation Center, offering premium services in a separate building with a private entrance, exit, and special amenities for travelers.
The airport’s history dates back to its initial name, Hato Airport, named after the nearby town of Hato. However, in 1954, it was renamed Dr. Albert Plesman Airport, honoring the director of the Royal Dutch Airlines. Despite the official change, the name Hato remained in common use. In recent times, it has been officially recognized as Curaçao International Airport.
During World War II, the airport served a critical role as one of the busiest in the Caribbean, used by the United States Army Air Forces for anti-submarine patrols. In the 1960s, preparations were made for the arrival of the Boeing 747, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s history.
Curaçao Airport Partners (CAP) initiated an extensive expansion project, enhancing the airport’s facilities, including the check-in area, airport boulevard, arrivals hall, and various services and stores. The terminal expansion project aims to double the departure waiting area, offer more space for passengers, and accommodate larger wide-body aircraft. It also includes the addition of a second Mirador, providing an ideal spot for plane spotting and photography enthusiasts.
