Dubrovnik International Airport, also known as Čilipi Airport, is the principal international gateway to Dubrovnik, Croatia. Situated approximately 15.5 km (9.5 mi) from Dubrovnik’s city center, it ranks as Croatia’s third busiest airport, following Zagreb Airport and Split Airport, in terms of passenger traffic. This airport boasts Croatia’s longest runway, capable of handling heavy long-haul aircraft, and it is a significant hub for leisure flights during the European summer holiday season.
The airport’s history traces back to 1936 when the Yugoslav flag carrier Aeroput established the first route to Dubrovnik, connecting the city to Belgrade via Sarajevo. Over the years, air traffic to Dubrovnik increased, with regular flights to Vienna, Brno, Prague, Belgrade, and Tirana. However, due to World War II, aviation operations in Dubrovnik were temporarily suspended.
The current Dubrovnik International Airport was inaugurated in 1962, and it experienced remarkable growth during Yugoslavia’s peak aviation year in 1987, serving over 835,000 international passengers and 586,000 domestic travelers. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia, the airport surpassed the one-million-passenger mark in 2005. Today, Dubrovnik Airport boasts the most modern passenger terminal in Croatia, with a recent addition, Terminal C, offering expanded check-in and security facilities, departure lounges, and increased annual capacity to handle up to 3.5 million passengers. Future plans for the airport include the development of a commercial zone, a four-star airport hotel, and runway expansion.
