Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA), stands as a significant international airport located in Seawell, Christ Church, Barbados. It serves as the primary entry point for air travelers arriving in Barbados and plays a pivotal role as a major gateway to the Eastern Caribbean. The airport offers direct flights to various destinations, including the United States, Canada, Central America, and Europe. In 2016, GAIA ranked as the eighth busiest airport in the Caribbean and the third busiest among the Lesser Antilles, following Aruba’s Queen Beatrix International Airport and Guadeloupe’s Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport.
Furthermore, GAIA serves as a critical link for cruise ship passengers traveling to and from the Port of Bridgetown. It also functions as the base for the Regional Security System (RSS) and houses the Regional (Caribbean) Police Training Centre.
Originally known as Seawell Airport, GAIA underwent a name change in 1976 to honor Sir Grantley Herbert Adams, the first Premier of Barbados. Situated approximately 12.9 kilometers (8.0 miles) from Bridgetown, the capital city of Barbados, GAIA is officially located in Seawell, surrounded by relatively flat suburban terrain and boasts convenient access to the ABC Highway (highway 7), facilitating travel to the capital and various destinations along the island’s north and west coasts.
A significant achievement in Grantley Adams International Airport’s recent history is its extensive upgrade and expansion project, involving an investment of approximately US$100 million by the government. The project included the construction of a new arrivals hall, positioned adjacent to the existing arrivals and departures terminals. The airport’s remarkable transformation took place while it remained operational for up to 16 hours a day. The present infrastructure is designed to meet Barbados’ aviation needs, with Phase III of the construction project focused on optimizing aircraft parking.
