Chiclayo International Airport, officially known as FAP Captain José Abelardo Quiñones Gonzáles International Airport, serves as an important international gateway for the city of Chiclayo in Peru. The airport was inaugurated on April 16, 1956, and received its official designation as an international airport through R.D. No. 0022-94 MTC in March 1994. It is named in honor of José Quiñones Gonzales, a national hero who was born in Pimentel.
Since March 2008, the airport has been under the operation of Aeropuertos del Perú, a private company that obtained the concession rights for the airport in 2006. Recognizing the need for expansion and modernization, plans have been set in motion to enhance Chiclayo International Airport with an investment exceeding 350 million soles. This ambitious project encompasses a comprehensive rehabilitation of the existing runway and the construction of a new passenger terminal. The objective is not only to improve the travel experience for passengers but also to facilitate the export of goods produced in the region.
The modernization of the runway entails a complete replacement with a brand-new concrete runway, 35 cm thick, capable of accommodating large-tonnage aircraft from various parts of the world. To facilitate a smooth transition during construction, the initial phase of the project will focus on expanding the temporary runway, which will utilize the runway of the nearby FAP airbase. The subsequent stages of the project are expected to span approximately 11 months. Looking ahead, the regional transport authority of Lambayeque has outlined a second phase of the project, which entails expanding the airport’s facilities and introducing jet bridges to enhance the boarding process for passengers, similar to those seen in Lima.
