Talara International Airport, officially known as Cap. FAP Víctor Montes Arias International Airport, serves as a crucial transportation hub for the city of Talara in Peru. The airport is operated by AdP S.A. (Aeropuertos del Perú S.A.) and holds significant importance in the Piura Region. It serves as both a relief airport for Cap. FAP Guillermo Concha Iberico International Airport and a gateway to the renowned beaches of Los Órganos, Máncora, and Punta Sal, providing faster access to these popular coastal destinations.
During World War II, Talara International Airport played a vital role as a military installation for the United States Army Air Forces Sixth Air Force. Its strategic location along the South American coastline served as a defense against Axis powers submarines. American forces arrived on March 8, 1942, and construction of barracks and other facilities commenced in August of the same year. The 336th Service Group was stationed at the airport, providing essential support resources for the assigned personnel.
In July 1944, as the war came to a close, the last aircraft departed from the airport, and most American personnel returned home. However, a small contingent remained to operate a communications station under the Army Communications Service 153d Communications Squadron. This communications facility continued to function until January 31, 1947, primarily focusing on training Peruvian military personnel in advanced communication techniques.
Today, Talara International Airport continues to serve as a vital transportation link for the region.
