Es-Sénia Airport, also known as Ahmed Ben Bella Airport, is an airport located approximately 8.7 kilometers south of Oran, Algeria. Its history is intertwined with significant events from World War II when it was utilized by the French Air Force. During the war, La Sénia Airport, as it was known then, played a pivotal role first under the Armée de l’Air and later under the Armistice Air Force of the Vichy government after June 1940.
One of the defining moments in the airport’s history occurred during the Operation Torch landings in 1942 when it was a primary objective during the assault on Oran on November 9. This operation involved a paratroop task force aiming to seize La Sénia Airport directly, with an armored task force ensuring the field’s capture. The airport was targeted with aerial attacks, including dive bombers and fighter escorts, which faced strong antiaircraft fire and Vichy fighters. The airfield became a battleground, resulting in damage to the hangars and multiple air combats. Ultimately, Company B of the 1st Armored Regiment captured the airfield around 1000 hours, as many Vichy aircraft had already taken off, possibly to French Morocco.
Es-Sénia Airport’s history is a testament to its military significance during World War II, serving as a location of intense conflict and strategic importance during the Operation Torch landings.
