The Guanacaste Airport, formerly known as Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport and commonly referred to as Liberia International Airport, is a vital transportation hub located in the Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica. Situated just 11 kilometers (7 miles) west-southwest of the city of Liberia, this airport serves as a gateway to the picturesque Pacific coast and the western region of Costa Rica. Initially inaugurated as an international airport in October 1995, the Guanacaste Airport has undergone significant transformations over the years. Initially, it started with only one weekly charter flight, but within a year, the airport experienced rapid growth, expanding its flight offerings to one daily flight. This expansion was a testament to the increasing popularity of Costa Rica as a tourist destination and the airport’s ability to accommodate the growing influx of visitors.

In order to further enhance its operational capabilities and passenger experience, a new terminal building was constructed. This modern facility covers an area of approximately 23,000 square meters (250,000 square feet) and boasts a contemporary design that prioritizes efficiency and increased capacity. The new terminal features state-of-the-art amenities, including spacious waiting areas, restaurants, duty-free shops, and other passenger services. Its design aligns with the airport’s commitment to providing a seamless and enjoyable travel experience for both domestic and international travelers.

Recognizing the significance of branding and regional identity, the airport underwent a name change in 2021. While it was commonly known as Liberia International Airport, the decision was made to rebrand it as the Guanacaste Airport, reflecting its location within the Guanacaste Province.

However, Juan Santamaría International Airport provides additional connectivity to cities in South America and the Caribbean.

While it was once the busiest airport in Central America, it now holds the second position in terms of passenger traffic, following Tocumen International Airport in Panamá. Despite this, Juan Santamaría International Airport was honored as the 3rd Best Airport in Latin America – Caribbean at the Airport Service Quality Awards presented by the Airports Council International.

One distinguishing feature of Juan Santamaría International Airport is its single runway, which accommodates the operations of large widebody aircraft, as well as a variety of private jet sizes. This allows for the seamless handling of both passenger and cargo flights, contributing to the economic growth and connectivity of the region.

Tobías Bolaños International Airport, situated in the Pavas District of San José, Costa Rica, serves as one of the country’s four international airports. As the secondary airport serving the city of San José, it complements the primary airport, Juan Santamaría International Airport, and plays a vital role in the region’s aviation infrastructure. The airport derives its name from Tobias Bolaños Palma (1892-1953), a renowned Costa Rican pilot.

With a single runway measuring 1566 meters in length and 23 meters in width, Tobías Bolaños International Airport operates at an elevation of 1002 meters above mean sea level. Tobías Bolaños International Airport holds a significant position as the primary hub for general aviation in Costa Rica. Eight flight schools operate out of Tobías Bolaños International Airport, providing comprehensive flight instruction to aspiring pilots.

Located in Limón, Costa Rica, Limón International Airport serves as an essential transportation hub for the Caribbean side of the country. As one of the four international airports in Costa Rica, it plays a crucial role in connecting this region.

After a hiatus of nearly 20 years, the airport reopened on 1 July 2006, initially focusing on domestic flights. This reopening brought much-needed connectivity to the southern Caribbean area, including towns such as Puerto Limón, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Manzanillo, and Gandoca. These vibrant coastal towns, known for their natural beauty, pristine beaches, and cultural richness, are all conveniently located within a two-hour ground transportation radius from the airport.

While currently serving domestic flights exclusively, plans are underway to modernize the airport to meet international standards and accommodate international passenger flights in the future. Central to these plans is the construction of a new passenger terminal that not only reflects the local culture but also emphasizes environmental sustainability. From energy-efficient systems to the use of locally sourced materials, the goal is to create an airport that harmonizes with the natural surroundings, preserving the pristine beauty of the Caribbean coast.

In addition to the terminal expansion, there are plans to enhance the airport’s infrastructure, particularly the landing area. The current runway, which is 10 meters wide, will be widened to 18 meters, allowing for safer aircraft operations. Furthermore, the runway’s length will be extended to up to 1137 meters, enabling the airport to accommodate a broader range of aircraft and handle increased passenger capacity.

The modernization of Limón International Airport represents a significant investment in the region’s infrastructure and tourism potential. By improving its facilities, expanding its operational capabilities, and embracing sustainable practices, the airport is poised to become a vital gateway for international travelers, further fostering economic growth and promoting the natural and cultural treasures of Costa Rica’s Caribbean side.
