Blaise Diagne International Airport, located near Diass in the Thiès Region of Senegal, is a prominent international airport situated 43 kilometers (27 miles) east of Dakar’s downtown area. It has assumed the role of the primary airport serving Dakar, taking over from Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport, which had become too small to handle the growing demands of air travel. This airport bears the name of Blaise Diagne, a historic figure as the first black African elected to France’s parliament in 1914. Blaise Diagne International Airport serves as a vital gateway connecting Senegal to various regions, including Africa, Europe, Macaronesia, the Middle East, and the USA.
The airport’s history is marked by a series of delays in its construction and opening. Initially slated for completion at the end of 2011, the opening date was postponed by nearly a year in September 2012, and subsequent delays continued. In January 2015, it was announced that the airport would finally open in June 2015, but the actual opening date was further pushed to early 2016. The project’s construction costs exceeded initial estimates, reaching 566 million euros, with substantial contributions from the Saudi Binladin Group. After years of anticipation, Blaise Diagne International Airport officially commenced scheduled operations on December 7, 2017, representing a significant step forward for Senegal’s air travel infrastructure.
