Viru Viru International Airport, situated in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, stands as the nation’s largest international airport and a pivotal gateway connecting Bolivia to domestic, regional, and international destinations across North America, South America, and Europe. As a bustling aviation hub, it plays a central role in the Bolivian air travel landscape and serves as the primary base for Bolivia’s largest airline, Boliviana de Aviación. What makes Viru Viru International Airport especially noteworthy is its capacity to accommodate large aircraft, including notable models like the Boeing 747-400, Airbus A340-600, and Boeing 777-300ER.

The history of this prominent airport dates back to the visionary concept of General René Barrientos in 1965. As a former Bolivian president, he set forth the idea of establishing an airport in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, intending to create an intercontinental aviation facility. Construction efforts soon commenced and continued until the airport’s completion and inauguration in 1983, ultimately replacing the outdated El Trompillo Airport. From the moment Viru Viru International Airport welcomed its first flights, it assumed a pivotal role as a primary portal for international air travel. It was notably employed as a hub by Lloyd Aéreo Boliviano before its operations ceased in 2008.

In a significant development, the government of Bolivia entered into a 25-year contract with Airport Group International on March 1, 1997, to manage three of the country’s largest airports: El Alto International Airport in La Paz, Jorge Wilstermann International Airport in Cochabamba, and Viru Viru International Airport. Servicios de Aeropuertos Bolivianos Sociedad Anonima (SABSA) was established to oversee this concession. However, in 2004, Spain’s Abertis/AENA acquired Airport Group International, and in March 2022, SABSA was replaced by the newly formed government agency, Navegación Aérea y Aeropuertos Bolivianos (NAABOL), which now manages Bolivia’s airports as a state-owned entity. This transition marks a significant change in the management of Bolivia’s airports, ensuring the continued development and efficiency of facilities like Viru Viru International Airport.
