V. C. Bird International Airport, located in Antigua just 8 km northeast of the capital city, St. John’s, is a prominent international gateway to the beautiful islands of Antigua and Barbuda. The airport has a rich history dating back to its origins as a United States Army Air Forces base around 1941. Initially known as Coolidge Airfield in honor of Capt. Hamilton Coolidge, an American pilot who lost his life during World War I, the airport has undergone significant transformations over the years.
Following its military service, Coolidge Airfield was renamed Coolidge Air Force Base (Coolidge AFB) in 1948 before transitioning into a civil airport in 1949. For several decades, it operated under the name Coolidge International Airport. However, in 1985, the airport was rechristened as V. C. Bird International Airport in honor of Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, the first prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda.
In recent years, the airport has undergone significant modernization and expansion efforts to enhance its capacity and passenger experience. A new passenger terminal was constructed, becoming operational in August 2015. This state-of-the-art terminal covers 23,000 square meters and features modern amenities such as jet bridges, advanced security screening facilities, self-check-in kiosks, baggage carousels, a food court, VIP lounges, retail stores, restaurants, and more.
