Punta Cana International Airport, located in the eastern Dominican Republic, stands as a remarkable testament to innovation and growth in the world of aviation. Built and owned by Grupo Punta Cana, it opened its doors in December 1983, becoming the first privately owned international airport globally. Over the years, it has evolved into the busiest airport in the Dominican Republic and the second-busiest in the Caribbean, serving as a gateway to paradise for millions of travelers. In 2022, it saw over 8.3 million passengers and nearly 50,000 commercial aircraft operations, while in 2023, the airport accounted for a staggering 60% of all air arrivals in the Dominican Republic, connecting travelers to 90 airports in 26 countries.

The airport’s history traces back to 1971 when Grupo Puntacana established the first hotel in the region, known as “Punta Cana Club,” alongside a rudimentary airstrip. With no terminals or paved runways, this was merely a flat piece of land. As the area grew in popularity among tourists, a road connection was established to the capital of La Altagracia Province, Higüey, making it more accessible. However, travelers still had to pass through Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo and take a short flight in small planes to reach Punta Cana. Recognizing the need for a true airport, Grupo PuntaCana embarked on the journey to build one.

Punta Cana International Airport’s construction began in 1982, with architect Oscar Imbert envisioning open-air terminals with palm-frond roofs and architecture inspired by Native American Tainos and Arawak structures. The design aimed to harness the coastal breezes from the Caribbean Sea for cooling, eliminating the need for costly air conditioning. Despite the airport’s remote location, construction persisted, and it finally opened on December 17, 1983. Over time, the runway expanded, and the airport introduced long-haul flights, fostering tremendous growth. In 2011, a second runway was unveiled, making it the first Caribbean airport with two runways exceeding 10,000 feet in length. Subsequent expansions, including the opening of Terminal B in 2014 and a VIP lounge with a pool in 2017, have propelled Punta Cana International Airport into a world-class travel hub.
