Princess Juliana International Airport
Name:Princess Juliana International Airport
ICAO: TNCM
IATA:SXM
City:Sint Maarten
Country:Sint Maarten
Address:Airport Rd, Simpson Bay, Sint Maarten

Princess Juliana International Airport (IATA: SXM, ICAO: TNCM) stands as the primary gateway to the captivating Caribbean island of Saint Martin, specifically located on the Dutch side within the country of Sint Maarten. Named after Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, who visited the island in 1944 when she was the heir presumptive, this airport has a unique feature – incredibly low-altitude landing approaches due to its proximity to Maho Beach. It serves as a hub for Winair and plays a crucial role in connecting the smaller Leeward Islands, including Anguilla, Saba, Saint Barthélemy, and Sint Eustatius.

The history of Princess Juliana International Airport dates back to World War II when it began as a US military airstrip in 1942. Commercial flights commenced in 1943, marking the airport’s transition to a civilian facility. In 1964, the airport underwent a significant renovation and relocation, complete with a new terminal building and control tower. Subsequent upgrades in 1985 and 2001 kept the airport modern and efficient. Moreover, the airport embarked on a comprehensive modernization plan in 1997, comprising multiple phases to accommodate the growing passenger traffic.

Phase I, completed in 2001, involved runway improvements and the construction of a new apron, among other enhancements. Phase II saw the introduction of a radar facility, a new air traffic control tower, and the construction of a modern terminal capable of handling 2.5 million passengers annually. The new terminal, boasting four jetways for large aircraft like the Boeing 747, opened its doors in late October 2006. Phase III of the masterplan, which includes an extended terminal building and a full parallel taxiway system, may be implemented in the future. Additionally, in 2007, the Franco-Dutch treaty on Saint Martin border controls was ratified, allowing for joint border controls on “risk flights.”

In September 2017, Princess Juliana International Airport faced a significant challenge when Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 hurricane, struck the island, causing substantial damage to the airport’s infrastructure. However, the airport demonstrated resilience, reopening on October 10, 2017, with temporary facilities while repair work continued. Today, it continues to serve as a vital link to this stunning Caribbean destination.
