The airport was named after the then-president of Colombia, Enrique Olaya Herrera, who had been a staunch supporter of Mejía’s vision for an airport in Medellín. Prior to the inauguration of José María Córdova International Airport in 1985, situated in the neighboring municipality of Rionegro, Olaya Herrera Airport was known as Medellin International Airport.
