Mariscal Sucre International Airport, located in Tababela parish about 18 kilometers (11 miles) east of Quito, Ecuador, serves as a major international airport for the city. It holds the distinction of being the busiest airport in Ecuador and ranks among the busiest airports in South America. Due to its location, it is colloquially referred to as Tababela Airport.
Construction of the new airport began in 2006, marking a significant milestone in the region’s aviation infrastructure. The financing contract for the project underwent renegotiation and was signed on August 9, 2010, further facilitating the airport’s progress.
The airport serves as a significant hub for Avianca Ecuador and LATAM Ecuador, playing a crucial role in connecting travelers to various destinations. Previously, it served as the main hub for TAME, the national flag carrier of Ecuador, until the airline underwent liquidation by the Ecuadorian government in 2020.
Opened in February 2013, Mariscal Sucre International Airport replaced the older airport of the same name, which had been in operation for 53 years. The decision to construct a new airport was driven by the need to expand capacity and accommodate larger aircraft, as the old airport, located amidst the mountainous city of Quito with high wind currents, presented significant risks and limitations for further development.
The airport is named after Antonio José de Sucre, a prominent leader in the fight for independence. Notably, Mariscal Sucre International Airport received the prestigious 5-star rating from Skytrax, making it the first airport in the Western Hemisphere to achieve this distinction, highlighting its exceptional standards and passenger experience.
