Maputo International Airport, formerly known as Lourenço Marques Airport, stands as Mozambique’s largest and most significant air travel hub. Situated just 3 kilometers northwest of Maputo, the country’s capital, this airport plays a vital role in connecting Mozambique with the rest of the world. It serves as a prominent gateway for both domestic and international travelers, offering a wide range of destinations, primarily within Africa but with some intercontinental connections. Moreover, Maputo International Airport is central to the operations of LAM Mozambique Airlines and Kaya Airlines, acting as a hub for these carriers.

In recent years, the airport has undergone an extensive modernization and expansion initiative, with the initial phase of this ambitious project receiving support from China’s Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Company. This endeavor aimed to transform the airport’s facilities to accommodate more passengers and offer improved services. The first phase culminated with the inauguration of a new international terminal in November 2010. This terminal boasts a remarkable capacity of 900,000 passengers annually, a significant increase from the previous 60,000 it could handle. While originally intended to coincide with the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in neighboring South Africa, the airport’s expansion was not completed in time. Nevertheless, it was operational for the All Africa Games hosted in Maputo in 2011, showcasing the airport’s enhanced facilities.

The second phase of the project involved the construction of a modern domestic terminal on the site of the old terminal, further bolstering the airport’s capacity and capabilities. With the comprehensive renovation, Maputo International Airport is on track to double its annual passenger capacity from 450,000 to 900,000, marking a significant step toward fostering tourism in the city and the nation as a whole. This revitalized terminal now boasts 14 check-in counters, state-of-the-art electronic flight information panels, a VIP lounge for dignitaries, escalators, and an energy-efficient central cooling system. With the capacity to accommodate 400 arriving and departing passengers per hour, this modernized airport is a symbol of Mozambique’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and expanding its global connectivity.
