On May 25, 2016, the airport underwent a significant change, being renamed Leonard M. Thompson International Airport. This renaming was done in honor of Leonard M. Thompson, an esteemed figure from Hope Town, who served as a distinguished member of the Royal Canadian Air Force and flew bombers during World War II.
