El Trompillo Airport is a notable airport located in the southern part of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, just approximately 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) from the city’s central plaza. This airport holds a significant place in the history of aviation in Bolivia, having been established in 1920 with an initial runway that measured only around 800 meters (2,624 feet) in length. While it was initially named “Captain Horacio Vasquez” in honor of a pilot who lost his life in an accident while flying from Argentina to La Paz, the airport’s colloquial name, “El Trompillo,” emerged over time due to its location.
For a span of 65 years, El Trompillo was the sole airport serving Santa Cruz. It wasn’t until 1984 that the city’s international airport, Viru Viru, was constructed, thereby transforming El Trompillo’s role. Subsequently, El Trompillo primarily catered to local flights and the training activities of the Bolivian Air Force. Over the years, airlines like Lloyd Aéreo Boliviano (LAB) and Panagra utilized this airport, with records of around 70 departures and arrivals involving the Air Force, along with both small and large commercial carriers. Nevertheless, as of 2019, commercial passenger flights have been absent since the national carrier, Transporte Aéreo Militar, ceased its operations.
While El Trompillo Airport has seen changes and challenges over the years, its historical significance and continued utility for certain aviation activities in Santa Cruz make it a noteworthy part of Bolivia’s aviation landscape.
