Dubrovnik Airport, also known as Čilipi Airport, serves as the primary international gateway to Dubrovnik, Croatia. Situated approximately 15.5 km (9.5 mi) away from Dubrovnik city center near the town of Čilipi, the airport has played a crucial role in connecting the region to global destinations. Renowned for its scenic location and convenient access to the Adriatic coast, Dubrovnik Airport has seen significant growth in passenger traffic and infrastructure development.
In terms of passenger throughput, Dubrovnik Airport was the third-busiest airport in Croatia in 2019, trailing behind Zagreb Airport and Split Airport. During the peak of Yugoslav aviation in 1987, the airport witnessed a remarkable influx of passengers, serving 835,818 on international flights and an additional 586,742 on domestic services. After the breakup of Yugoslavia, the airport surpassed the one-million-passenger mark in 2005, reflecting its increasing importance in the region.
Originally inaugurated in 1962, Dubrovnik Airport underwent several transformations to meet the growing demands of travelers. The outdated original terminal, which dated back to 1962, was replaced by a new, state-of-the-art passenger terminal in May 2010. Spanning over 13,700 square meters, the new terminal offers modern facilities and has a capacity to handle up to two million passengers annually. It represents the most contemporary terminal in Croatia, providing an enhanced travel experience for visitors.
Dubrovnik Airport comprises three terminal areas, namely A, B, and C. The addition of Terminal C in February 2017, features spacious check-in and commercial areas spanning over 1,000 square meters, eight security lanes, a departure lounge with various commercial and catering facilities, a premium lounge, and multiple restaurants. The terminal is equipped with sixteen gates, with two allocated for domestic flights and the remaining fourteen for international services.
With its ongoing development, Dubrovnik Airport has increased its annual capacity to handle up to 3.5 million passengers. Terminal A has been permanently closed for passenger traffic and now functions exclusively as a baggage sorting facility. Future plans for the airport include the establishment of an extensive commercial zone and the construction of a four-star airport hotel. Additionally, long-term plans involve building a new runway and repurposing the existing runway into a taxiway, ensuring the airport’s continued growth and adaptability to meet future demands.
