The airport’s history is a captivating tale of visionary leadership and continuous development. Initiated in 1959 by Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the construction started, and Dubai International Airport officially opened in 1960 with a modest airfield capable of handling aircraft like the Douglas DC-3 on a compacted sand runway. Over the years, it underwent significant expansions and upgrades, including the construction of longer runways, more terminals, and cutting-edge navigational systems to meet the demands of wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 747 and Concorde.
