In 1997, the Bolivian government entered a 25-year contract with Airport Group International to oversee the operation and management of the country’s three largest airports, namely El Alto International Airport in La Paz, Cochabamba International Airport, and Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. This partnership continued until 2013, when the Bolivian government ordered the nationalization of these crucial aviation assets. As a result, SABSA Nacionalizada took over the management of the airports. Then, in March 2022, a new chapter in Bolivia’s aviation history unfolded as the state-established agency, Navegación Aérea y Aeropuertos Bolivianos (NAABOL), stepped in to manage these airports, ushering in a new era for Bolivia’s aviation sector under public stewardship.
