Cibao International Airport, also known as Santiago Airport, is a pivotal aviation hub located in Santiago de los Caballeros, the Dominican Republic’s second-largest city. Positioned just 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) southeast of Santiago City’s center, this airport is the country’s third-busiest in terms of passenger traffic and aircraft movements, following Punta Cana International Airport and Las Américas International Airport. The airport primarily caters to Dominicans residing in the United States, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Puerto Rico, as well as Haitians in the Cibao Region. The airport’s history dates back to its proposal in 1969, with the construction taking place from 2000 to 2002. It officially opened on March 18, 2002, with flights operated by American Eagle. In 2005, a significant expansion project added a second floor, customs hall, and terminal enhancements, while runway expansion plans are also on the horizon.
