Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (ACS) in Managua, Nicaragua, serves as the primary joint civil-military international gateway to the country. Named in honor of the Nicaraguan revolutionary Augusto Nicolás Sandino, the airport has undergone several name changes over the years. It initially started as Las Mercedes Airport in 1968 before being renamed Augusto C. Sandino International Airport during the Sandinista government in the 1980s. It was later changed to Managua International Airport in 2001, only to be renamed once more to its current title in February 2007, to pay tribute to the revolutionary hero.
The airport’s history is intertwined with the development of aviation in Nicaragua. It replaced the older Xolotlan Airport, which had become too small to accommodate the growing airline services in Managua. Las Mercedes Airport underwent upgrades to accommodate Boeing 707 aircraft and was expanded in the early 1970s to meet modern standards. During its peak, it was served by several renowned carriers, including Pan Am, KLM, Taca Airlines, Avianca, Iberia, and more. However, when the Sandinistas took power, the airport deteriorated until it was revitalized in 1996 with new facilities and boarding bridges.
