Alicante International Airport, officially known as Aeropuerto de Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, stands as a significant international gateway, situated approximately 9 km southwest of Alicante and 10 km east of Elche in Spain. Serving the southern part of the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia, the airport has become a major hub for Air Nostrum, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Ryanair, and Vueling. Throughout the 2010s, Alicante–Elche experienced a remarkable increase in passenger traffic, setting a record of 15 million passengers in 2019, making it Spain’s fifth busiest airport. The majority of flights, up to 80%, are international, with the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, and Sweden being the primary sources of passengers.

The airport’s rich history dates back to its inauguration as El Altet airport on May 4, 1967, replacing the older aerodrome La Rabassa. Over the years, it evolved into a bustling hub, witnessing shifts in leadership among airlines, with EasyJet taking the lead in 2004 after the decline of conventional carriers. The airport’s growth has been marked by strategic developments, including Ryanair establishing a base in November 2007 and the opening of the current Terminal N in March 2011. In 2020, the airport faced challenges with a significant drop in passenger numbers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, recording over 11 million fewer passengers. In 2021, as part of a renaming ceremony marking the 110th anniversary of Spanish poet Miguel Hernández, the airport adopted the name Aeropuerto de Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández.

Terminal N, the sole terminal currently in public use, stands as a testament to Alicante–Elche’s commitment to accommodating its growing passenger numbers. Officially opened on March 23, 2011, after more than five years of construction, Terminal N is a vast facility with an area of 333,500 square meters, six times the size of the previous two terminals. Equipped with 96 check-in desks, 40 gates, and 16 baggage claim carousels, the terminal has a capacity of 20 million passengers per year. Despite challenges, such as the termination of routes by Ryanair in 2011 due to disagreements over fees, Alicante International Airport has continued to play a crucial role in connecting travelers to and from southeastern Spain.
