Chileka International Airport, situated approximately 13 km northwest of Blantyre, Malawi’s second-largest city, serves as a vital hub connecting the region to international destinations. As Malawi’s second international airport, it complements the role of Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, the nation’s capital. With geographical coordinates of 15°40’52.0″S latitude and 34°58’18.0″E longitude, the airport stands at an elevation of 2,555 feet above sea level, ensuring efficient operations for a variety of aircraft.
Equipped with two asphalt-paved runways, Chileka International Airport facilitates smooth takeoffs and landings. Runway 10/28 spans 2,325 by 30 meters, while Runway 15/33 measures 1,372 by 30 meters. These runways play a pivotal role in accommodating the diverse needs of air traffic, contributing to the airport’s status as a crucial transportation hub.
In April 2019, the airport initiated a significant renovation and extension project, temporarily closing Runway 10/28. Originally planned to conclude in three months, the renovations faced delays, pushing the reopening date several times. Throughout this period, the airport remained operational, managing smaller aircraft on Runway 15/33. Larger aircraft were redirected to Kamuzu International Airport, with connecting flights to and from Chileka International Airport on smaller aircraft. The project was successfully completed in December 2019, bringing both runways back to normal operations on January 1, 2020, reinforcing Chileka International Airport’s capacity and infrastructure for continued service to the region and beyond.
